Orazio Gentileschi wants to send his daughter Artemisia to a convent. Shes not having it. She wants to be a working artist (a rather daunting prospect for a woman at that time).

Long story short, she wins out and paints her way to freedom.

With Caravaggio as an influence, she learns to master light and shadow to tell the stories of authoritative, heroic women in her work and becomes one of Europes most sought-after painters. Her induction into the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno the first woman everawards her certain freedoms unheard of for most women of the day. She no longer needs a mans permission to travel alone, to sign contracts, or to buy paints and supplies.

She owns her life.
